Back to School Skincare for Teens

Teenagers Should Create a Daily Skincare Routine

With fall approaching, it is important we discuss back to school skincare for teens. After you spent a summer in the pool, on hikes, and sleeping in, your skin needs some TLC.  Heading back to school is the perfect time to start making skincare a regular part of your daily routine. Teens face numerous challenges with their skin thanks to a variety of changes, including hormones. Practicing an effective skincare routine will not only increase the appearance of your skin, but also your self confidence. At the Artisan School of Cosmetology, we know the importance of a good skincare routine. We’re sharing back to school skincare for teens in this month’s blog.

Understanding Your Skin is Highly Important

Understanding your skin is the most essential part of any healthy skincare routine. Your hormone levels rise during your teenage years, and that can contribute to oily skin. Finding an effective routine will help you stabilize and maintain healthy skin. The elevated hormone levels will make your skin produce sebum. This causes you to experience breakouts, as oil buildup blocks your pores, causing blemishes and acne. Also, the increase of Keratin, which causes thickening of the skin, leads to the trapping of oil in the pores.

Cleanse Your Skin Carefully, and Exfoliate

Skincare for teens needs to remain consistent to show results. You should wash your face at least twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. A good routine is to just do it after brushing your teeth. If you have gym, play a sport or work out, add another wash after those activities. To help remove stubborn dead skin cells that could clog your pores, exfoliate twice a week.

Use the Correct Acne Products for Your Skin

If you have stubborn acne, you can try various products.  Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are two of the most common over the counter acne treatments. Salicylic acid dissolves skin debris that clogs pores, acts as an anti-inflammatory, and also helps red inflamed pimples go away faster. Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen on the skin to destroy bacteria, opens up pores, and decreases inflammation. Treatments can lead to dryness, so you should use a daily moisturizer.  If these treatments don’t work, it is important to talk to your doctor or a dermatologist.

Apply Sunscreen Every Morning as Part of Your Routine

Even though you are inside school most of the day, it’s still vital that you apply sunscreen every morning. By doing this you’re helping avoid skin cancer in the future. Your face will still get sun rays before and after school, as well as through the window of the school, bus, and vehicle. Hey, you also never know when your gym teacher will decide to take the class outside.

Eat Healthy and Exercise to Help Your Skin

Junk food or eating bad food in general is a BIG acne trigger. Make sure you take time to eat several healthy meals a day, and drink plenty of water. Cut back on soda and other sugary drinks you have splurged on over the summer. It is also important to exercise. Don’t just wait for gym class. Take an evening walk with your parents, or schedule a pickup game with your friends.

Another healthy activity most teens hate is to get a good night’s sleep. You may want to stay up chatting with friends, watching TV, or checking out social media. But sleep gives your skin time for repair.
